Before you dive into our guides and listings, here are a few notes on how we use certain terms and what you can reasonably expect from our coverage.
Neighbourhood boundariesWhen we talk about Alexandria or Arlington, we mean the areas roughly bounded by the main railway line to the north, the canal to the south, and the two high streets that give the districts their names. These are informal boundaries, not official council wards, and some streets may sit just outside them.
Independent shopsWe use this term for businesses that are locally owned and operated, usually with no more than a handful of branches. If a shop is part of a larger chain, we say so explicitly. We do not accept payment for inclusion in our guides, and we always note when a trader has sponsored a particular feature.
Walking routesOur routes are designed for a comfortable pace, with plenty of time to stop and look. Distances are approximate and measured along the suggested path, not as the crow flies. We recommend checking local transport updates before setting out, as roadworks and diversions can occasionally affect the route.
Events calendarListings are compiled from public sources, council notices and submissions from local organisers. We do our best to verify dates and times, but events can change at short notice. Please confirm with the organiser before travelling, especially for outdoor events that depend on the weather.
Historical referencesWhen we mention dates, former uses of buildings or old street names, we rely on local archives, council records and published histories. Where sources disagree, we note the discrepancy rather than presenting one version as fact. If you have a correction, we would love to hear from you.
Newsletter and subscriptionsOur weekly newsletter is free and arrives every Thursday morning. You can unsubscribe at any time with one click. We never share subscriber details with third parties, and we do not run paid advertising in the newsletter itself.
